The One That Flew Farther

On comparison and mixed feelings
The One That Flew Farther: Ori and Pebble sit on a hillside watching two paper airplanes fly into the distance.
Ori and Pebble look up as another paper airplane flies farther than Ori’s.
Ori applauds the airplane flying far away. His own has landed beside him, and Pebble sits behind him.
Ori folds another paper airplane beside Pebble, with sheets of paper scattered on the ground.
Ori sits with his knees drawn up. The unfolded airplane lies between him and Pebble.
At sunset, Ori and Pebble watch paper airplanes cross the city and bay from a hillside.
Ori unfolds a creased sheet beside Pebble, with a newly folded paper crane nearby.
Ori and Pebble watch a paper airplane with a sprout design fly into the distance.
Ori and Pebble sit side by side on the closing page, with the Creator Psychology message.

Read the story
  1. Sometimes joy for someone
    else and sadness for yourself
    can exist together.

  2. That one flew farther than Ori’s.

  3. Ori was truly happy for him.
And truly, a little sad for himself.

  4. “I just want to fold another one.”

  5. ‘Was it broken?’
    ‘No.’
‘Then why are you taking it apart?’
    ‘...I don’t know.’

  6. ‘I really am happy for him.’
‘So why do I still wish mine
    had flown the farthest?’

  7. The folds were still there.
That didn’t mean it had to become what it was before.

  8. Being happy for you doesn’t require me
    to stop feeling for myself.

  9. Creating is a way of speaking to the world
and a way of meeting yourself.
Here, there are no right answers,
    only a little more courage
    and a lot more possibilities.

Ori & Pebble · After the story

Room for both feelings.

Ori really is happy for him, and he really does feel a little sad. The story lets both feelings stay.

When you are happy for someone else, what would you say to the part of you that feels a little sad?
